According to Today’s Dietitian nutrition magazine, yoga does not burn as many calories as cardiovascular exercise. However, it does have an influence on successful weight loss and maintenance. According to studies, regular yoga practice resulted in less weight gain with aging. It also significantly decreased body weight, percentage body fat and body image. Recently, many programs for weight management and eating disorders use yoga as part of their programs.
Other research done on obese women with eating disorder who practice yoga for 12 weeks, showed an improvement in the eating habits and more self-confidence and a better a connection with food habits. Overall, they reported feeling more positive about their body and had better eating habits.
When doing yoga, the body naturally comes to its optimal weight; losing or gaining the needed weight. Yoga activates the body, leading to an improvement in digestion and a more efficient usage of food according to the body needs.
